I wouldn’t say that I like DC more than Marvel– I like them both, but with Marvel hitting it out of the park every single time, and watching DC struggle so badly with one movie after the other, I kind of want DC to catch up and to get the opportunity to tell a lot of their good stories before the whole superhero movie glut dies off. They had a hit with Aquaman, showing that they don’t have to just stick to Batman and Superman reboots. Hell, it probably showed that people really want more DC heroes than just Batman and Superman.
There have been valid arguments to be made that DC’s older characters just can’t keep up with Stan Lee’s newer, hipper and multifaceted creations. But one of the best things that happened to the Marvel cinematic universe (other than being bought up by Disney) was perhaps, their inability to use Spider-Man and the X-Men for a period of time. Suddenly, Marvel’s biggest cash cows were out of reach, so they dug a bit deeper and made household names out of Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, Rocket Raccoon, Dr. Strange
Swamp Thing might be coming to TV at some point, and TV seems to be where DC feels familiar right now. Supergirl, Flash, Green Arrow and the Teen Titans all have found a degree of success on the small screen, but to be honest, while it’s nice that these stories are being told, they could be told better, and big-budget movies are a good way to embed characters strongly into the public pop culture zeitgeist. What I’m saying is, we need a Swamp Thing movie. Really, I’d love a whole Justice League Dark movie, with Constantine, Deadman, Swamp Thing et al, but since DC couldn’t pull off their regular Justice League, let’s just start one at a time.
Superman: Red Son
This isn’t a different character…it’s Superman…but it’s also a very different character. While the recent Superman movies have had the beginnings of an Injustice universe vibe, they never quite got there. And every other Superman movie is going to be essentially the same. Except for Red Son. People have been asking for this for years, and for good reason. It’s just a badass twist on DC’s flagship. Another good alternative for this list would be The Batman Who Laughs, a really amazing story in which the Joker becomes Batman as you would expect, it’s fucking insane. At this point, if you want to keep rehashing Batman and Superman, make it different and memorable.
Booster Gold is another character that has popped up briefly on TV and in some of DC’s animated ventures. But he needs his own big budget, big screen movie. Goofy name, awesome character. He’s a pompous time traveling badass who is forced to go through some serious personal growth due to repercussions of his own actions. It’s a complex story, a deep character, but also one that could bring some laughs to the
While Red Hood is very much in the Bat-verse and tied to Batman’s story line, he’s such an incredibly badass character, that he definitely deserves his own live action movie. I used to hope that somehow, DC would fit one or more of the Robins into the main DCEU timeline in a way that would work…maybe someone spins off to become Nightwing, but I don’t see that happening. If you’re gonna do another Batman movie, have it spin directly off into Jason Todd as Red Hood. People will fucking love it.
And this is where people are starting to doubt my
I have always been a big fan of Plastic Man. He’s got a dumb outfit and goofy sunglasses, but he’s both funny and OP as fuck. If DC wants to bring a lot more fun into their cinematic universe, as it looks like they’re doing with Aquaman and Shazam, Plastic Man could be another great alternative.
He’s been on a number of DC animated series and he’s another one that might come to TV or might get his own movie someday, but outside of cartoons, DC doesn’t really seem to be serious about bringing Martian Manhunter to the big screen. He was 100% left out of the live action Justice League, but he’s just too incredible to be forgotten. Maybe it’s the “Martian” part, the guy with the green skin, maybe DC thinks he’s too “weird” to fit in with their gritty movie style, but what I’ve been saying here is that they need to completely throw out their Zach Snyder grittiness and just have fun.
The (many) Lantern Corps
As in all of it, or as much as you can pack into one or two movies. Or a trilogy if they can manage to not fuck that up. I had high hopes for the 2011 Green Lantern movie, but where to start…there was so much wrong with that movie…from the bad writing and dialogue to the crappy CGI. But the main thing was that it wasn’t until the very last minute that they started to connect it to the whole Lantern Corps universe. Which by the way, is huge. The entire damn universe times 100 huge. It would be another way to take the DCEU off Earth and into the stars. Bring in all the weird and crazy aliens that are at the heart of the Lantern Corps stories and just go crazy with it.
Another DC character that I’ve always loved…Hawkman. He flies, he kicks so much ass, he’s got that super badass mace. He’s got kind of a mythical Thor-like vibe, only he’s fucking Hawkman. It’s got ancient curses, aliens, and a cool suit. DC managed to turn Aquaman completely around, now it’s time to introduce the world to a live action Hawkman movie.
Etrigan the Demon
Created by Jack Kirby, Etrigan was originally based in Gotham City and used as a villain in the Bat-verse, and then he became so much more. DC has such a strong line-up of horror and supernatural titles that they use so little of. Constantine has pretty much been their only big budget film into their supernatural line-up, and that movie was pretty good. Etrigan the Demon is a demon summoned by Merlin who bonds with one of the knights of King Arthur who later turns into an antihero demon hunter. He’s also connected to Neil Gaiman’s Sandman universe, which could be a way to slowly pry that door open. Even if that doesn’t happen, there’s still demons, Hell, King Arthur and more demons.
So what do you think? What DC characters or stories would you like to see brought to the big screen?
