IHC Movie Review: Rise of the Guardians

Opening scene… you hear Jack Frost speaking for the first time. He has no idea who he is or why he is here. He rises through icy waters, breaking through ice and lands softly. Barefoot, he finds his now trademark staff, learns of his abilities and later flies to a village celebrating a Winter Solstice, only to find that he is incorporeal when one local passes straight through him. The only one who talks to him is the man on the moon, who tells him his name and nothing else. The audience never actually hears the moon speak.

It looks good, it’s got a good cast, but I’m not sure how much I want to see a movie about western cultural holiday icons as some sort of super team. Not unless it’s got Martin Luther King Jr going all Luke Cage/Black Dynamite.

Dreamworks’ upcoming ‘Rise of the Guardians’ is an interesting looking film, in which Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, Jack Frost, the Sandman and the Tooth Fairy are a sort of a Justice League that protect children of the world from evil. Could be sort of fun, though I’ve never been a fan of the Dreamworks animation style. Maybe Glen Keane can change that when he gets settled in over there.
Rise of the Guardians hits theaters November 21st.
