Twenty years ago, Nirvana played “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for the first time

This is video of the very first time Nirvana played “Smells Like Teen Spirit” on stage. It was 1991 at the OK Hotel in Seattle comes from the 2004 box set With the Lights Out. Just a few short months after this performance, Nirvana would hit the national airwaves and the rest is history.

Of the song, Cobain famously said he “was basically trying to rip off the Pixies… we used their sense of dynamics, being soft and quiet and then loud and hard.” It’s an apt homage, considering that Nirvana’s explosive success — and Nevermind’s ushering in of mainstream alternative — was in many ways a culmination of the long road tread by the bands that comprised the ’80s college rock and indie underground universe.

Apparently, the ghost of Kurt Cobain is alive and well in Russia

This guy in Novosibirsk, Russia has somehow managed to channel Kurt Cobain’s voice almost exactly. Really creepy and uncanny.

This is perhaps the worst cover song evar.  Hold crap, who told Paul Anka this was a good idea?

The Jackson 5’s “Rockin’ Robin” mashes up surprisingly well with “Smells Like Teen Spirit”

I sort of expected this to suck, but it’s sort of the polar opposite of suck. And then I discovered that Go Home Productions makes tons of awesome musical mashups. This Nirvana / Alan Parker mashup is particularly groovy, as is this Who / Madonna one.
