Watch a scene from Studio Ghibli’s never released Little Nemo movie
There was a Japanese film adaptation of Windsor McKay’s Little Nemo in Dreamland in 1989, but several years earlier, Studio Ghibli had been the ones that were working on the project. In 1984, they produced this elaborate test pilot, but their version never went anywhere.

Winsor McCay was one of the pioneers of animation, and one of his first cartoons from 1911 was “Little Nemo”. From the very first days of cartoons, live action and animation lived side-by-side. McCay’s “Gertie the Dinosaur” from 1914 is often cited as the first cartoon in which animation was used to convey a distinct personality.
