Publisher and journalist Andrew Breitbart dead at 43
Conservative publisher, journalist and political discussion catalyst Andrew Breitbart died unexpectedly last night in Los Angeles at the age of 43. Even though he’s become known as an outspoken voice in conservative politics through his myriad media outlets, Breitbart had also worked closely with Ariana Huffington and was essential in launching The Huffington Post.

Daily Discussion: Is it fair anymore to expect journalists to be 100% bias-free?
Caitlan Curran was recently employed as a freelancer for WNYC to cover the Occupy Wall Street protests… that is until the above picture of her holding a sign in the protests ended up on Boingboing, and WYNC fired her for violating journalistic standards by getting herself involved in the news.

Last night, Andy Rooney stepped down from his weekly essay segment on 60 minutes after 30 years and sixty years in CBS. In this essay, he reflects on his sixty plus years in journalism and why he’s not technically “retiring”. You may love him or hate him, he may have made you laugh and he may have pissed you off, but he’s a true original.

Andy Rooney is retiring from 60 Minutes after over 30 years
Andy Rooney is currently 92 years old and has been with CBS for 60 years. A little over 30 years of that time was spent as a regular on 60 Minutes, where he sat behind his cluttered desk offering his sharp-tongued opinion on news, technology, culture and these damn kids today. CBS announced that Sunday will be Rooney’s final regular appearance on the show, and that at 92, “he needs a break”.

Warco is a military FPS that replaces your gun with a journalist’s camera
There are several really good military FPSs out there these days, but besides a few minor changes, they’re all essentially pretty similar. Warco on the other hand (short for “War correspondent”) has you replacing your gun and the same techniques you learned years ago for a military FPS with a camera and a whole new set of skills.

The new hotness in online journalism: Animated gifs
Actually, they like to call them “cinemagraphs”, which is just a fancy word for fancy, upscale animated gifs, as opposed to I guess, the shit that we put up at the top of the sidebar every day. The animated gif above comes from a story about the making of strawberry beer, which you can read here, full of cinemagraphic goodness.
