Afternoon music: Jay-Z, Kanye West, Frank Ocean “No Church in the Wild”

I just love this song so much. It’s a great example of one of the unique things with hip hop… that is, that you can often have several different interpretations of the same theme from different voices in the same song. If you listen to Jay-Z, Kanye and Ocean, there isn’t one exact “thing” that the song is about, but there’s three different interpretations on the theme of finding some sort of peace in the middle of a storm.

Awesome French political ad of the day: Francois Hollande does “Niggas in Paris”

French Socialist presidential candidate François Hollande — who leads incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy after the first round of voting — has co-opted Jay-Z and Kanye West’s anthem “Niggas In Paris” for his latest campaign ad. The song backgrounds footage that shows Hollande campaigning in the outer Parisian suburbs among people of various ethnic backgrounds, as they hold up their voter registration cards. And Slate helpfully points out: “Creil,” one of the suburbs Hollande campaigns in during the ad, is pronounced “cray” as in, “That shit Creil.”

Campaign so hard Sarkozy is behind me.
