The once mighty Nintendo, is for lack of a better term, is kinda circling the drain. Sales of the Wii U have been awful and every day, a kid picks an iOS or Android device over a Nintendo 2DS or 3DS. They’ve got to do something, and fast. So in a meeting with investors earlier this week, Nintendo laid out a bunch of new ideas, the two big ones being a new flex pricing structure, where the more games you buy, the bigger discounts you receive on future Nintendo games, and secondly (finally!), an openness to the possibility of allowing Nintendo characters in games for mobile devices.
Apple got a lot of shit for the slow start of the Apple TV, but they hung in there, and now as the war for the living room heats up, they need to give the little black box a good update. And rumor has it that later this year, a brand new Apple TV will be hitting stores, with a huge update to the OS and possibly… hopefully… finally… include a game store, which would put Apple back into the game console market. Take that, Pippin.
Blizzard’s newest game, Hearthstone, is now free to play in open beta for PC and Mac, with versions for iOS and Android coming soon. It’s a digital collectible card game, along the lines of Magic: The Gathering, but simpler, faster and with heroes, classes, stories and abilities from Warcraft. The open beta has actually been open for a couple days now, but I’ve been… busy. Can’t talk, got warlocks to kill.
If you’re like me, you’ve probably written off the newest Sim City game entirely once you heard that EA was online multiplayer only. Because fuck being forced to hang out with bratty 13 year olds at 2 am. Finally, your prayers have been answered, as EA announced the next game update would allow for single player offline play. Ya know, like God intended.

Aside from all the smart TVs and 4K resolution TVs and smart watches at last week’s CES, there was this takeaway lesson: The era of any major differentiation between mobile and desktop is coming to an end. Your mobile will soon every bit as powerful as your desktop and the only reason left to own a non-mobile desktop-like workstation, whether it be a laptop or a tower, is because you’re a professional or a gamer that just needs that kind of serious upgrade in horsepower. And the chip to take us across that bridge will be new, crazy as fuck 192 CUDA core Tegra chip. Unreal Engine 4 will be coming to this chip, which is kinda a big deal, because that’s going in your tablets and phones and Android game consoles.
