In March of last year, there were rumors that legendary animator Glen Keane was unhappy with Disney, his long-time employer, and was negotiating with Dreamworks. Now it looks like the deal is done, as Keane has turned in his resignation letter.
As you may know, I’m a big fan of animation and I’m a big fan of Disney animator Glen Keane. Keane’s impact on Disney’s so-called “second golden age”, starting with the films of the 90s such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast can’t be understated. It could be argued that there hasn’t been a single animator so essential to Disney’s success and animation style since Ub Iwerks invented Mickey Mouse.
Glen Keane is a lead animator at Disney that for decades has brought some of Disney’s most charming characters to the screen, and whose style has become a template for modern Disney films. Here’s several nude sketches from his sketchbook, and you can see plenty more here.
