America’s first black president marks the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation

Exactly 150 years ago today, on January 1 1863, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation went into effect, freeing the slaves in the rebellious southern states and laying the groundwork for a complete abolition of slavery in the United States. And 150 years later, America’s first black president marked the historic anniversary.
