It’s the comic book movie adaptation story that won’t die. People want an ElfQuest movie, there are people that want to make it, but it just doesn’t seem to happen. The movie rights have been shuffled around a number of times, but maybe this time it might be it. Maybe.
Once again, the hopes of an Elfquest movie appear to be dashed after WB killed the project, saying it was “too much like The Hobbit”. Well, maybe from a marketing perspective, because Elfquest is pretty damn unlike The Hobbit. I guess you can only have one fantasy movie per year or something or everyone just gets totally confused.
Since Warner Bros probably won’t deliver on the Elfquest movie that they’ve been sitting on the rights to for like forever, a group of Elfquest fans got permission of creators Wendy and Richard Pini to do their own fan feature. The following teaser was shown off at WonderCon and is very much a teaser, showing very little of the actual film. But I don’t care if it’s got bad acting and lousy sound, I’ll watch the damn thing anyway in lieu of a big budget Elfquest film right now.
There may never be a big-budget Elfquest movie, but an experienced group of fan filmmakers are doing things their own way, which is exactly how Elfquest creators Richard and Wendy Pini have always done things. So it’s no surprise that this bootstrappy attitude of amateur filmmakers Stephanie Thorpe and Paula Rhodes has gained the blessing of the Pinis while Warner Bros tries to figure out what to do with the property.
