It was announced today that Dreamworks purchased Classic Media for $155 million, giving the studio access to characters owned by Classic including Casper the Friendly Ghost, Where’s Waldo, Lassie, The Lone Ranger, Postman Pat and George of the Jungle.
With quite a few animated features now under its belt, Dreamworks has decided it wants to go the Disney and Universal route and build its own theme park. The park, which will be in New Jersey, will showcase Dreamworks’ animated films such as Shrek, Puss in Boots, Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar.
As you may know, I’m a big fan of animation and I’m a big fan of Disney animator Glen Keane. Keane’s impact on Disney’s so-called “second golden age”, starting with the films of the 90s such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast can’t be understated. It could be argued that there hasn’t been a single animator so essential to Disney’s success and animation style since Ub Iwerks invented Mickey Mouse.
