Morning music: The Batman Theme Song made with real bat sounds

Bats produce sounds that are not audible to human ears. First these ultrasounds were digitally reduced to frequencies that are audible. Then the different batsounds were assigned different keys on a keyboard. On this keyboard - the only real Bat-Organ - Ulrich Seidel played the Batman Theme (Neal Hefti, 1966). The video clip was compiled by Sándor Seuntjens using footage from Batman (film, 1966), Batman (animated television series, 1992-95), and National Geographic (natgeowild.com).

Scientists discover that male bats like to go down on female bats. Glad we have that confirmed so I can finally sleep at night.

It’s already been known and observed that female bats will often suck their boyfriend’s bat-dick, but until recently, male bats haven’t been observed reciprocating. But now we can report, that male bats do in fact like eating bat pussy. Sciiiience!

Robotic bat wing gives insight into the mechanics of bat flight

Other animals that can fly, like birds, have bodies that have been built around flight for a long, long time. Bats are the only truly flying mammals, and are basically rats with long skin-made wings. The mechanics of bat flight are very different that that of birds, so in order to truly understand how bats fly, researchers built a robotic bat wing, which should come in handy for robot vampires of the future.

Bats listen for the sounds of flies fucking to catch the prey unawares

If you’re trying to catch flies the easy way, you have to wait until they stop buzzing around in circles like a maniac. The best time to do that is when they’re too busy knocking boots to notice anything around them, which is exactly what bats do. Using their super sensitive hearing, bats wait until they hear the tiny grunts and moans of fly sex and swoop in to get a two for one easy meal.

Fun bat fact of the day: Bats have nipples in their armpits

Since antiquity, people have noticed that most mammals follow the one-half rule when it comes to nipples. Humans generally have one offspring, with a normal max of two (pre-fertility drugs) and therefore have 2 nipples. That rule is pretty consistent throughout the mammal world, and it’s true with bats. Bats generally only give birth to one baby at a time, and so have two nipples. But contrary to George Clooney’s bat-suit in ‘Batman and Robin’, bats have nipples in their armpits.

Vietnamese leaf-nosed bat has the ugliest face in the entire animal kingdom
When scientists first spotted Griffin’s leaf-nosed bat in Chu Mom Ray National Park in 2008, the animal was almost mistaken for a known species, the great leaf-nosed bat, said Vu Dinh Thong, of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology in Hanoi.
Still, Vu Dinh and his team, thinking there was a chance the bat might in fact be new to science, used nets to catch some of the docile animals. “While captured, some similar body-sized bats, i.e. [the] great leaf-nosed bat, reacts very angrily,” he said by email. “But Griffin’s leaf-nosed bat seems quite gentle.”

It seems to be cute animal day on IHC. Just to round things out, here’s another great cute animal video found by my wife. Bats are fucking awesome.

Bats can be tricked into trying to drink from metal plates

Everyone knows that bats use echolocation to hunt, but scientists wanted to also learn to what extent they used echolocation to get a picture of their environment. The answer, probably not surprisingly is that they use echolocation almost entirely to see what’s around them— but it did give scientists a good excuse to fool bats into crashing into pieces of sheet metal.
