The luxury space balloon that will take tourists up to 100,000 feet

There’s Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic and Elon Musk’s SpaceX, but not as well known is this luxury space balloon from World View, that in about four years, should be ready to start taking tourists on five hour flights through the upper levels of Earth’s atmosphere. It may not have Virgin Galactic’s super sexy stewardesses or whatever Branson will have up there, but it will give you the most amazing space balloon ride ever, and that counts for a lot.

Balloon popping, it’s a thing that some people get in to

So today I learned that a coworker of mine has a girlfriend that does this on the side for extra cash. I did not know this was a thing. I had to tell someone.

Google wants to use balloons to cover the world in wi-fi

Information is power, but for many parts of the world, access to the internet is slow in coming, and requires a great deal more infrastructure work to be done before local populations can have access to porn and cat videos. But an ambition plan by Google would use strategically placed balloons to cover as much of the globe as possible with internet wi-fi hotspots.

Popping 100 balloons in a row with one badass laser

Using a Wicked Spyder III laser, this guy pops 100 balloons lined up like dominos. I could have watched this for 10,000 balloons.

80 foot tall Superman balloon from the 1940 Macy’s Thanksgiving’s Day Parade
Before you know it, it’ll be Thanksgiving Day (not you Canada, you already had yours), and that means the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving’s Day Parade, which means giant balloons and morning newscasters bundled up like its -30 F regardless of the temperature, drinking as soon as the sun comes up, making off-color remarks about celebrities you don’t give a shit about.
Oh, 1940. Sorry, got on a tear. In 1940, things were a bit simpler and the Macy’s parade had this enormous and sort of ugly but charming Superman balloon.

Tim Burton to have his own creepy balloon in this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
The character is called B. Boy, and was created by Burton. Supposedly, the balloon won’t be filled with Smylex gas.
“There’s always been something about balloons,” Mr. Burton said. “You see them deflated and you see them floating. There’s something quite beautiful and tragic and sad and buoyant and happy, all at the same time.”

The European Union bans kids under 8 from blowing up balloons. Why does the EU hate fun?

The European Union, in a bid to become the absolute definition of a Nanny State has decided to outlaw fun by passing a law making it illegal for children 8 and under to blow up balloons. It’s not good enough just to have a choking hazard label or for parents to just not give balloons to kids that aren’t smart enough the get the concept of blowing into it (not sucking it down your throat)… we have to PASS A LAW.

In the future, you could take a ride to space on a giant balloon

Just like some envisioned in the late 1800s, in the near future, you could be taking a trip to the edge of Earth’s orbit in a giant balloon. People have easily and cheaply sent cell phones into near space on a balloon, so why not people?

This enormously clever animation by Dulcidio Caldeira uses 600 balloons popping in sequence along a 200 meter rail to achieve an effect similar to a flip book. The animation is a commercial for MTV Brazil by Brazilian creative agency ParanoidBR.
