As if Google doesn’t already rule your virtual life, they’ve now make an augmented reality game that turns your everyday life into an MMO. It’s called Ingress, and right now it’s only on Android and only available by invite, but it uses your phone to overlay quests, information and other junk about the world around you.
Augmented reality is showing up all over these days, on mobile phones and mobile gaming devices like the Nintendo 3DS. And at some point in the future, you might be wearing AR contact lenses so you can watch porn, movies and surf websites right against your retina instead of stupid external screens.
When it was in arcades, OutRun was one of the hottest things around. I was never particularly a fan, but a lot of people were. But what if you could take an OutRun arcade cabinet and drive it around the real world?
Augmented reality is pretty cool technology, but currently if you want to make the best use of it, your AR device requires identifying some sort of AR tag in the real world to know where to project its magic. But with Sony’s SmartAR system, the machine detects the nearest flat surface and does the AR without any sort of marker.
Last week I finally snagged a Nintendo 3DS and after playing the augmented reality games, the first thing I thought was “Oh shit, that AR card would make a killer tattoo.” And so this weekend, I got the 3DS AR tattoo and it’s fucking awesome.
