Today is not only Talk Like a Pirate Day, it’s also Adam West’s birthday

So we’ve been lying down on the job a bit for Talk Like a Pirate Day, because once you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all. But it’s also Adam West’s birthday, so fittingly, here he is in an old commercial for High Seas Aftershave, the pirate’s choice.

When Captain Kirk met Batman: “Alexander the Great” from 1964

Back in 1964, before William Shatner was Captain Kirk and before Adam West was Batman, they both starred in a failed TV pilot called “Alexander the Great”.It was meant to be a “buddy comedy” set during the Battle of Issus with Shatner in the role of Alexander (the Great) and West as his “compatriot” Cleander. So as not to let one diva outshine the other, the plan was to let each star play the lead in alternating episodes. West says that it was “one of the worst scripts I have ever read and it was one of the worst things I’ve ever done,” and Shatner was “deeply, deeply, horrendously disappointed when this series didn’t sell.”
