Studio Ghibli, the anime studio behind such movies as Ponyo, Howl’s Moving Castle, Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke have announced that they’re expanding from the silver screen and are producing a pair of games for the PS3 and the DS titled “The Another World” and “i no Kuni: Shikkoku no Madoushi”, which I understand will be sort of the same game, only tailored towards different systems.
The story of (both?) games is about a young boy loses his mother early in life, and the doll she gifted to him comes to life and gives him a magic book which spirits him away (pardon the pun there) to a parallel universe like his own. In this world, he might be able to revive his mother. The PS3 trailer is below.
And then here’s the trailer for the DS version, that comes with a real-life 353 hardbound book full of art and spells that you can draw in-game. Fucking sweeeet.
There’s no set release date in the US. The games are supposed to come out in Japan in December and then sometime in 2011 everywhere else. You can see more screenshots of the DS version as well as photos of the included book here.
