Check Out The Trailer For Wu Tang Vs. The Golden Phoenix, The Directorial Debut Of The RZA
Deciding that he wants to “be taken seriously” as a film director, music producer and huge kung fu movie buff The RZA is releasing his directorial debut, Wu Tang vs. The Golden Phoenix… at some point. Anyway, here’s the trailer.
The hip hop icon says he made Golden Phoenix to prove to himself and Hollywood that he could be taken seriously as a director. He had some help from Eli Roth, who is billed as an executive producer for the film. The film also features several kung fu legends like Robert Tai, fight choreographer from the 1978 classic The Five Deadly Venoms. Golden Phoenix was made in the style of 1970’s “Kung Fu Theater” – grainy shots, crazy sound effects and lots of dubbing. RZA is well known for his kung fu obsession; just listen to any Wu-Tang album. Now he’s taken that vast knowledge of the genre to create “a world where everyone fights…and they’re all fighting for one thing – the Wu Tang weapon.”
As I mentioned before, RZA is a huge, huge fan of cheesy old kung fu films. He got the gig doing the soundtrack for Kill Bill Vol. 1 because he and Tarantino both share that passion, and the trailer for Golden Phoenix is sure full of old school low budget kung fu action, but that’s about it. It’s got a lot of good choreography, so he’s proven himself worthy of putting together quality martial artists, but the whole “director” part leaves something to be desired. Yeah, I’ll still probably watch it. Release date is TBA.
