Mozilla unveils their open source smartphone

Mozilla has been working on their own open source, web standards based smartphone OS for a while now, but this week they unveiled their piece de resistance, an actual honest-to-God Firefox OS smartphone.

Spain-based GeeksPhone and Mozilla, in partnership with Spanish wireless company Telefonica, have unveiled a developer preview smartphone that uses the Firefox OS. The smartphone features a 3.5-inch screen, a 3-megapixel camera, a 1GHz Snapdragon S1 CPU, MicroUSB and MicroSD ports, over the air updates, and comes unlocked, allowing users to add their own SIM cards. The idea behind the operating system and device is to offer a smartphone that uses the Web, via HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS, as its native environment.

There’s no mention of pricing or a full release date, but Firefox OS developers will be able to get their hands on the phone in February.
