How Dave McKean created those gorgeous Sandman covers before Photoshop
These days, you never really question how a comic book cover or book cover is made, because even if there are a variety of tools in use, they’re all going to be digital. When Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series debuted, it was before the days of Photoshop, yet artist Dave McKean created some incredibly striking covers using real art and real objects.
McKean created the collages as three dimensional dioramas. As Gaiman said:
They really were that size: paintings and assemblages that Dave would take to get photographed, and send the transparency to DC Comics to use as a cover.
