Pictures of Felix Baumgartner’s jaw dropping, record breaking jump from the edge of space
Just a few minutes ago, Austrian badass Felix Baumgartner landed safely on solid ground after plummeting from an amazing 128,000 feet. That’s about 24 1/2 miles straight up, where he fell 115,000 feet in just a few minutes, hitting a top speed of 833.9 mph, or Mach 1.24, making him the first person to break the sound barrier while not in a vehicle.
The above photo is right before the door to his cabin opened, after 2 1/2 hours of slow ascent, tethered by a giant high altitude balloon…
The door is open, his feet come out…
And off the platform he goes…
The upper part of his fall was captured by both infrared and visual light cameras
At one point, he started spinning for a few seconds as everyone in mission control held their breath to see if he could recover…
He does recover, and at 5,000 feet, his parachute deploys…
