2012 Amazon election heat map based on book purchases

For this year’s American presidential election, Amazon did something interesting, but making a heat map showing which slant of political books people across the country are reading.
As you can see, it heavily favors Republican voters, even in states that consistently vote Democrat. It may seem surprising, since liberally minded people are stereotyped as reading more, but you also have to keep in mind that these are books that clearly lean and are marketed towards one side or the other, and in that context, there are usually far more books on the market that lean heavily to the right. Think of how many books have been put out by the likes of Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly etc etc… some of them churn out one or two books or more per year that are sold in conjunction with a talk show or radio show or speaking tour. And with the Republicans looking to take away the White House from a Democrat, that printing schedule picks up and passionate voters snatch the books off the shelves. Just remember how many anti-Bush books were on book store shelves in the last administration.
