Facebook to introduce real money games, aka gambling. What could possibly go wrong?

It’s not like some people don’t spend enough of their life on Facebook playing games like Farmville and Mafia Wars. Now Facebook it appears will be adding real money games, as in games that cost real money to play and could win you real money. So… Facebook is going to add gambling? This sounds like a fan-fucking-tastic and totally responsible idea.

In a move that could be bad for recovering gambling addicts, Facebook is reportedly introducing new games where users can bet real cash. The first one of the bunch is called Bingo Friendzy, and according to The Telegraph, U.K. residents will be the first to get access to it. Julien Codorniou, Facebook’s head of gaming for Europe, Middle East, and Africa, says gambling is not only very popular but also well-regulated in the U.K.: “For millions of bingo users it’s already a social experience [so] it makes sense to offer that as well.” You will, however, need to be 18 or over in order to collect your prizes.

More titles will apparently be introduced alongside Bingo Friendzy in the future, including money-sucking virtual slot machines. Even Zynga, whom we bet you know for various games such as FarmVille, Words with Friends, and CityVille, will also be introducing real-money versions of its bingo and poker games in 2013. No word yet on whether these games will be available in the U.S. as social gambling is banned in many states. That’s bad news for Facebook whose advertisement revenue model hasn’t been doing very well on account of its mobile website being ad-free.
