Guy who stripped naked in an airport to protest the TSA found not guilty of indecent exposure
Several months ago, Oregonian John Brennan, while on his way to catch a flight, stripped down completely naked at the security checkpoint to protest the TSA. Brennan was charged with indecent exposure, but a judge found Brennan not guilty, saying that his action was a legally protected protest.
Circuit Judge David Rees has declared John E. Brennan not guilty of public indecency for stripping buck naked to protest the TSA’s invasive searches at Portland International Airport in April.
“It is the speech itself that the state is seeking to punish, and that it cannot do,” Rees said of the lawsuit against Brennan. Brennan insists his protest was spontaneous, not calculated. When a machine detected “nitrates” on him, he says “I was not interested in being hassled so I took off my clothes to show them I was not carrying any explosives.” He added I know the irony of taking off my clothes to protect my privacy. They’re getting close to seeing us naked, so I thought I’d up the ante.”
