One clever teen solves Newton’s 300 year old riddle

Long before computer-driven physics simulations, trying to come up with a solution for a real-world physics problem took a tremendous amount of calculation by hand. Three hundred years ago, Isaac Newton asked if anyone could calculate the exact trajectory of a ball, taking into account both gravity and wind resistance. Recently, a 16 year old from India took that challenge and beat it.

Shouryya Ray (who now lives in Germany) is the boy’s name, and he figured out how to precisely calculate the path of a projectile under gravity and subject to air resistance. In other words, he can calculate the flight path of a tennis ball and predict how it’ll bounce off a wall, something that was only possible through computers before now. He did so while working on a school project, which clearly wasn’t your regular baking soda volcano.

“When it was explained to us that the problems had no solutions, I thought to myself, ‘well, there’s no harm in trying,’” he said.

After this, he got bored and solved a 19th century unsolved problem that deals with the collision of a body with a wall. Both problems are from the field of dynamics.
