Turning living bacteria into biopixels for fun and profit

Biologists at the University of California San Diego have grouped colonies of fluorescent bacteria into “biopixels” that can be used to form the living equivalent of a neon sign. So far, their largest signs have used 13,000 biopixels, made up of over 50 million individual bacterial cells.
