Breaking: NYPD have moved in to evict OWS from Zuccotti Park

So I’m sittin’ here, late night, should be going to bed and I happen to hop on the Twitter and the whole fucking thing is buzzing about helicopters over Zuccotti Park in NYC, Occupy belongings being dumped into dumpsters, people being arrested, people being evicted.

Just a little while ago, NYPD made a surprise move to evict OWS protestors from Zuccotti Park, though it’s not known who made the eviction order. Zuccotti had previously been a safe zone, since it’s a privately owned park, and one the owner has said is free to be used for the occupation.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said the eviction is temporary, and protestors will be allowed back in the park when the place is cleaned up a bit. Right now, people in the People’s Kitchen section of the OWS camp have been arrested and people are talking on the Livestream feed about tear gas.

“Occupants of Zuccotti should temporarily leave and remove tents and tarps. Protestors can return after the Park is cleared,” the mayor’s office said in a tweet at 1:34 a.m.
About 10 minutes later, the eviction had begun.
The group’s website video streamed the eviction under a banner headline that read, “NYPD is raiding Liberty Square.” Liberty Square is the former name of the park.

The Occupy call to action against unequal distribution of wealth and other causes began in Zuccotti in September before it spread nationwide and then globally.

Here, the encampment has taken on an air of permanency, with tents covering the public plaza from one end to the other. Protesters say they are there for the long haul.

No confrontations between police and protesters have taken place in New York in recent days.
