New Gap logo: Awful design decision or really clever marketing ploy?

Yesterday, the Gap announced that it was changing its logo for the first time in 20 years. Their old logo is above on the left, with the new one on the right. Companies update their logos all the time as times change, but so rarely does a company known for its style throw out a pretty decent logo for something that’s just plain hideous.
So were the people at the Gap smoking crack or what? That’s what everyone was asking. Well…
From Gap’s FB page:
Thanks for everyone’s input on the new logo! We’ve had the same logo for 20+ years, and this is just one of the things we’re changing. We know this logo created a lot of buzz and we’re thrilled to see passionate debates unfolding! So much so we’re asking you to share your designs. We love our version, but we’d like to see other ideas. Stay tuned for details in the next few days on this crowd sourcing project.
And then a Twitter account just for the Gap logo showed up, tweeting:
Do you really think the unwashed masses can come up with something better than ME? Peter Arnell is really rolling on the floor now.
Okay, that’s some clever marketing there Gap people.
