Steam hacked, credit card information possibly compromised
Steam confirmed today that the Steam forums were hacked, with thousands of accounts being exposed and credit card information may have been taken. Valve has advised for players to keep an eye on their credit card statements for suspicious activity, but there’s no other word about the extent of the damage yet.
“The Steam Forums are temporarily offline for maintenance. Your patience is appreciated.”
That’s the message greeting users who have tried to visit the official Steam forums over the past day. While Valve has yet to release an official statement on the downtime as of this writing, a Reddit user captured the screenshot above of the forums shortly before they were taken down showing that they were apparently hacked.
“Ever wanted to dominate the servers you play on with guaranteed results, but you were too afraid to cheat because of ban risks?” reads a message left on the forums’ frontpage by hackers. It goes on to recommend users visit a website where they can download hacks and other tools to cheat at playing games.
