Hell freezes over as Duke Nukem Forever is unveiled at PAX

Yes, that’s not a typo. Gearbox Software has taken over development of Duke Nukem Forever and the game was available for hands-on play today at PAX, with an official unveiling event later this weekend. But… but when Duke Nukem Forever comes out, where will we get all the obvious vaporware jokes from?

Speaking with the Wall Street Journal recently, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford said of Duke Nukem Forever’s tumultuous development period: “Clearly the game hadn’t been finished at 3D Realms but a lot of content had been created. The approach and investment and process at 3D Realms didn’t quite make it and it cracked at the end. With Gearbox Software we brought all those pieces together.” “It’s the game it was meant to be,” Pitchford added. “We’re in the polishing phase now. This is a game where we cannot make a promise we cannot fulfil.”

DNF will be coming to the 360, PS3 and PC “sometime in 2011”. And look! Video of people actually playing it:
