Video Game Fail Vault: Home Improvement for the SNES [I Heart Video Games]

For those of you living outside the US, be thankful that you never had to be subjected to the show Home Improvement starring Tim Allen. Sure, it had its funny moments, but it never should have gone on nearly as long as it did and it certainly never should have gotten its own SNES game. What the hell sort of game can be made out of a wisecracking dad that has his own home improvement show? A really, really bad one.

Shooting dinosaurs with a nail gun. That makes a whole lot of fucking sense. Just run with it. Somebody's bound to buy it. You know what TV show they should have made a game out of? Perfect Strangers. That would have been awesome.

This game is terrible.  I downloaded it a few years back after first learning of its existence.  Perhaps I'm a masochist... but Tim Allen and dinosaurs?  I couldn't pass it up.  It's truly an affront and beyond understanding...  It reminds me a bit of the Genesis version of Jurassic Park... only it sucks shit through a straw.

Got that story beat...

 

I was in Gamestop a year back with the little sister (she could attest to the this story-- it may sound outlandish, but I swear it's the truth).  We were just killing time and I was raiding the PS1 shelf.  Picked up a Pamela Anderson game.  Based on the TV show, VIP.  Also got a Bubsy 3D and a few others.  Most of them were 25cents each.

 

At check-out the clerk was mystifed that I had found a copy of Bubsy 3D.  "That's nothing," I said.  "I got a Pamela Anderson game here too..."

 

And just like that a swarm of pimple-faced, over-weight gamer cliches circled around me to get a glimpse of this holy relic, boxing my sister and I in.  It was like something from a really unfunny sitcom... and all over a crappy tv tie-in Pamela Anderson game...

 

And I swear, that was the most expensive game I bought that day.  Set me back a full 75 cents.  Worst 75 cents I ever spent.  Not even worth it for camp value.

Now I payed attention in biology and whatnot, but I don't ever remember a chapter or even a sentence referencing dinosaurs blowing up when they died.

 

Maybe thats something that happens ONLY when they're shot by a douchecanoe with a nail gun.

According to the wiki entry here , the game didn't come with any instructions at all. This sounds like one of the classic cases of an in-development game having a famous licenese wedged on top of it, but I can't find any evidence of that. I did some research, and I'm happy to say that none of the 3 programmers listed on this Gamefaq page work on video games anymore. Yay!
