Survey: What was your favorite halloween treat? [I Heart Free Candy]

I just cracked open a bag of candy that I got at work yesterday, only to find that it was chock full of awesome old-school halloween candies, like jawbreakers, Super Bubble gum, Now and Laters, generic suckers, and Smarties (the non-canadian kind). When I was a kid in the early 80s, we lived in a neighborhood with lots of old and young couples, but not many kids. As a result, we usually got tons of stuff from everywhere, which meant a lot of variety.

It looks like halloween is being dominated by mini-candy bars now. When i was a kid, the mini-candy bars were okay, but you could get those year-round. Some of my favorites were Peppermint Patties, Bit O'Honey, mini Rollos, and Smarties. I even managed to score a Whistle Pop one year! So,  what is your favorite halloween candy from your childhood?

i am and always was a whore

i am and always was a whore for reeses' peanut butter cups. but beyond that, i always loved getting Smarties, those little cheap individually wrapped square chunks of bubble gum and strawberry tootsie rolls.

I like giving out candy on Halloween, but I don't like answering the door, so this year, like usual, I just put the candy in a bowl on the porch with a couple spooky candles around it. It only took a couple groups to wipe it out, but whatever. Next year, I think I'm going to point a webcam at the bowl and set up a speaker and mic so i can yell at kids who take too much... and yeah, i'll post it here on ihc.

The candy i got for the kids this year was all chocolate-- reeses' cups, kit-kats and full sized Snicker's bars.

Oh yeah, and I've also got to

Oh yeah, and I've also got to add Nerds and sweet tarts and Fun Dip. Fun Dip was awesome. And there was this caramel candy I'd get a lot that was a flat chunk of caramel on a stick that came in a yellow wax paper wrapper with a picture of a baseball player on it. I don't remember what it was called, but it had this slight peanut butter taste to it that was fucking awesome. And those striped hard peanut butter flavored candies.

And even though Sour Patch Kids didn't come out until after I stopped trick or treating, Sour Patch Kids are the shit.

Reese's peanut butter cups

Reese's peanut butter cups are awesome of course, but you can get them any time.  I liked getting any chocolate bars, really, but rockets are the shit and only really ever show up around all hallow's eve.

My peers would always go back a few times if possible at the chip giving houses, too.

wait... do you mean chips as

wait... do you mean chips as in potato chips (crisps) or french fries? because if i was out trick or treating and someone was giving out homemade french fries, i think i'd have to just camp on their porch.

i have to go with the consensus

Reeses' Peanut butter Cups were the best, however any full size candy bar was awesome as well

Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?

Sweet tarts rocked my little

Sweet tarts rocked my little 9 year old socks.  Reeses Peanut Butter cups, Reese Pieces, Jolly Ranchers, red tootsie pops and Nerds fueled many a November 1st morning video game session.  The rest I just gave to my little brothers.  They'd eat anything.

More asians please.

Smarties and

Smarties and taking all the milky ways and snickers and freezing them. the best way to eat them, yum!

Can someone get me out of here?

Doublediamond410's picture

No way.

When I was a kid, my mom always used this tactic to keep me from getting to the candy she saved after Halloween. I always hated frozen candy and back then I was paranoid when I saw the white dust on the chocolate, thinking they had "gone bad" after being in there too long.

Classic treats

Let's see, my Trick or Treat days were between 1970 and 1976, so we're looking at purely classic candy treats.

- Mallo Cups - Reese's with Marshmallow filling (rock on!)

- Large Atomic Fireballs

- Wax Lips (come on!)

- Candy Cigarettes (yep, ot them often)

- Charleston Chews (HUGE and delicious - rip out every filling you have)

- Mary Janes (common in the South - will get the fillings the Charleston Chew missed)

- Bottle Caps candy (DEEELICIOUS, especially the Cola flavor)

- Wonka Bar with Golden Ticket (LOL)

- A bag of those little wax bottles filled with soda flavored liquid...AWESOME!

- Full sized Hershey bars (don't think they even made mini candy at all until 75)

I saw some candy cigarettes

I saw some candy cigarettes for the first time in ages in a gas station in Kentucky when I was through there a month or two back.  I thought about buying them, but then decided they'd still taste like crap.

Oh, I forgot to add this...You can find most old-school candy here: http://www.hometownfavorites.com
