IHC Reviews: Tekken 6 by Tinypenguininja [I Heart Video Games]

Tekken, the granddaddy of fighter games (OK so it isn't really even close to the granddaddy, but so what?) has finally made its premier on the Xbox 360, and I must say it is everything I was hoping for and then some. When the game opens up, you are shown a little cutscene introducing a few characters, including the hilarious bit with Bob, the amazingly stereotypical American, fighting some robbers, and the whole thing looks fantastic. At the opening menu you have a whole lot of things to choose from, and this is one point where Tekken excels. I mostly bought Tekken for the classic VS mode, but you also have the single player campaign, online play, customization options and much more.
The core focus of Tekken is, of course, one on one fighting mode. As you can expect, the controls are tight and responsive, the selection of characters is impressive and the graphics are wonderful. It is very similar to past Tekken entries, and the characters seem to feel the same with the exception of Yoshimitsu, who used to be an easy trump card anyone can win with. In the hands of a capable player, he is as deadly as ever, but as I have seen, a novice player will have a much harder time winning using him. This was intentional, to make him more of a choice for skilled players.

There is also the Scenario Campaign. At first I didn't like this mode, as the controls feel really bad, and the reason why soon made itself clear. The linear, 2D focus of a fighting game, which allows for directional input into combos, doesn't translate into 3D, so any combo that has a direction included is impossible to pull off. This might not sound that awful, but it really is a huge pain. It's also very hard to hit exactly who you want with anything more than a single punch or a single kick, anything that strings together or has to power up time will result in the severe ADD-suffering enemies to forget about you and attack your partner and move, causing you to miss 9 out of 10 times.
Also, the environments repeat. When your anime-stereotypical spiky-haired amnesiac character runs down the same dock for the 10th time, you might start to wonder if he just keeps running back to the beginning and forgetting what he's been trying to get to all along. However, despite the many flaws, I found the scenario campaign to be a somewhat amusing little aside that will be a major help in unlocking new clothing items for you to use on the fighters.

I didn't get into the online mode a lot, but the major problem I had was lag. It wasn't that the game was choppy, it just felt like when you would put in a command, it took a few seconds for the person on-screen to understand what it meant. When this wasn't occurring, however, I found online play to be fun, but it will really test your skills.
Boasting an astounding amount of overall content, wonderful customization and the terrific Tekken vs fights you've have come to know and love, Tekken 6 is a wonderful addition to current-gen fighting games, lack-luster single player aside. On a side note, sorry this took so long. I got a lot of stuff I gotta review and I now have two jobs, so I am very busy.
