A guard at the US embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan confessed yesterday that new recruits had to participate in naked parties and perform sex acts with other men in order to get promoted or be assigned preferable shifts. The guard, one of 12 who have complained, said that supervisors at ArmorGroup, a subsidiary of military contractor Wackenhut, not only knew about the "deviant sexual acts" but also helped to organize the hazing.

"It was mostly the young guys fresh from the military who were told they had to participate," said the guard, who spoke anonymously. "They were not gay but they knew what it took to get promoted." The State Department renewed ArmorGroup's contract to guard the embassy last month despite complaints as early as 2007. "The security of the US embassy in Kabul is in jeopardy," a diplomat wrote, because of ArmorGroup's "deficiencies."
