FTC to regulate blogging for the first time [I Heart Internets]
For the first time, the Federal Trade Commission will have regulation power over blogs. But before you get your panties in a bunch, it's for a pretty good reason. The FTC will require blogs who receive freebies or monetary compensation for product reviews to reveal that they get rewards for reviewing products or face a fine of up to $11,000 per offense.

This seems like a decent idea from a consumer point of view, since paying bloggers for seemingly realistic product reviews has become a big problem and it only seems fair that if some company is paying someone to write a favorable review of their product, that there should be some sort of disclaimer that that's the case.
And if you were wondering, IHC has never been paid to review any product. Every now and again, Comedy Central gives us freebie DVDs for giveaways, but there's never any stipulation that I have to positively review whatever. And I haven't even done that in a while, since the last several shows they've asked me to mention have been pretty crappy.
From Fox News:
The FTC's proposal made many bloggers anxious. They said the scrutiny would make them nervous about posting even innocent comments.
To placate such fears, Cleland said the FTC will more likely go after an advertiser instead of a blogger for violations. The exception would be a blogger who runs a "substantial" operation that violates FTC rules and already received a warning, he said.
Existing FTC rules already banned deceptive and unfair business practices. The final guidelines aim to clarify the law for the vast world of blogging. Not since 1980 had the commission revised its guidelines on endorsements and testimonials.
Cleland said a blogger who receives a freebie without the advertiser knowing would not violate FTC guidelines. For example, someone who gets a free bag of dog food as part of a promotion from a pet shop wouldn't violate FTC guidelines if he writes about the product on his blog.
Blogger Linsey Krolik said she's always disclosed any freebies she's received on products she writes about, but has stepped up her efforts since last fall. She said she adds a notice at the end of a post, "very clear in italics or bold or something — this is the deal. It's not kind of buried."

Upside to this
I am not all that mad by this, it seems it's more to protect the consumers than it is to hurt the bloggers. Think about it. You had a trusted site you go to for product reviews....most of us do. ...What if your preferred site isn't on the level with you about said product....you plunk down your hard earned cash only find that you purchased a yellow citrus fruit. You'd be pretty heated wouldn't you.
This is to stop BIASED reviews. People claim they have a golden goose just because they were "paid off" to say so.
Given my career choice, This may not effect me, I am an honest guy and wouldn't lead anyone the wrong way. I have always been that way. People work too hard to get screwed over in any way.

Agreed
Odd is right it seems they are doing this to protect the consumer when someone recieves kickbacks of course they are going to be biased towards the company that gives better items or more monetary compensation.
Greedo shot first!
B.S.
The government wants its foot in the door to regulating the internet so it can eventually control all political free speech. Noone listens to the mainstream media anymore because it has been discredited for parrotting the government's lies. This tactic always starts with a noble ideal like "protecting the consumer". Who could be against that? Reminds me of when the feds incinerated 27 kids at Waco in '93 and the attorney general said she did it to "save the children".
Aaaargh matey
But they can't stop us....there will always be us "pirates" who believe in freedom of speech and are willing to go toe to toe with big brother.
A little technical nohow and a big problem with authority go a long way. Especially when you factor in those who do trust the unbiased free media masses. I am ready to defend my right to speak and your right to hear free speech.

I admire your pro-feedom
I admire your pro-feedom attitude, Odd, just remember: all it takes is one "terrorist" attack (WINK WINK NOD NOD) for el presidente to declare a "national emergency" and seize control of the telecom industry for "the common good" (shades of Hitler). The feds shut down all the airports for 4 days after 9-11 and almost bankrupted the entire airline industry.
I guess we could switch to modems and FIDO net!
