Apparently, smoking around your Apple laptop voids the warranty [I Heart Tech]
Even though Apple computers are generally more expensive than PC laptops, they're high quality and the Apple Care warranty program is usually pretty good and comprehensive. That is, unless you smoke near your Apple computer, in which the smoke apparently is considered a biohazard that voids the warranty. Wait, what?

From the Consumerist:
I took my mid 2007 apple macbook (black) into the Jordan Creek Apple Store in West Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday, April 25th, because I had been experiencing some issues with it overheating, and figured the fan was bad. After some initial testing, they took the computer in for work under my Applecare plan, which has over a year remaining on it.
Today, April, 28, 2008, the Apple store called and informed me that due to the computer having been used in a house where there was smoking, that has voided the warranty and they refuse to work on the machine, due to "health risks of second hand smoke".
Not only is this faulty science, attributing non smoking residue to second hand smoke, on Chad's part, no where in your applecare terms of service can I find anything mentioning being used in a smoking environment as voiding the warranty.
And another one...
I bought an iMac for my son (for school) along with the extended Applecare warranty. A month ago, it quit working. My son took it to the authorized Mac service center. The "tech" informed him it would be ready in 48-72 hours. Five days go by and he's heard nothing, so I called. They informed me that his computer can't be worked on because it's contaminated.
When I asked for an explanation, she said he's a smoker and it's contaminated with cigarette smoke which they consider a bio-hazard! I checked my Applecare warranty and it says nothing about not honoring warranties if the owner is a smoker. The Applecare representative said they defer to the technician and my son's computer cannot be fixed at any Apple Service Center due to being listed a bio-hazard.
This computer cost approx. $3,000, with the extended warranty. I'm all for destroying cigarettes and putting big tobacco out of business (yes, I'm a reformed smoker), but to label a computer a biohazard because one is a smoker is going a bit too far in regulating who can have the warranty they purchased honored. Shouldn't there be some disclaimer stating that they won't honor warranties from smokers?
This isn't an isolated complaint, and numerous attempts by various consumers to get Apple to honor the warranty, since smoke isn't mentioned in the warranty itself. Sure, smoking is bad for you, and smoking around computers is bad for them as well, but smoke particles are no more a warranty voider than dust and far less a biohazard than dead skin cells.

Already read about that one.
Apple claims that it won't have any of its technicians exposed to the smoke remains or smell because it's a harmful chemical and blah blah blah.
This begs the question, does no one in ANY Apple lab center smoke? Do they hire people on the grounds of whether they smoke or not? Is there NO technician out there who sneaks in the occasional cig, or maybe smokes 3 packs a day, who cares?
Anything and everything is 'bad' for your computer, including but not limited to: dust, smoke, orange juice, vomit, etc...
This is a just a tasteless excuse by Apple to avoid fixing a computer that probably broke down for no good reason and they blame it on smokers.
Maybe if they wrote "smoking will void your Apple warranty" on the pack, less people would smoke, but those are people that deserve the lack of nicotine induced pleasure, since they bought an Apple product.
...they should put warnings
...they should put warnings like that on smoke packs. the ones they have are so ineffective anyways. the one with the teeth is my favorite!

I'd really like to know how much you have to smoke to kill your machine. That would be impressive to behold.
I helped my mom move
about ten years ago. She had lived in her apartment for ten plus years and was a chain smoker. I always thought that the paint was an antique ivory, until I moved the couch away from the wall, and it was pristine white (yuck). She gave my son a computer and I decided I would clean it up before setting it up in his room. I took the side panel off and it was encrusted with nicotine and tar and funk. The keyboard was gummy and the whole damn thing stunk to high heaven. Yeah it was gross but biohazard?
Put on a pair of gloves and a mask and get your asses to work apple, what are you a bunch of veals?
Abashed the Devil stood and felt how awful goodness is.

It's called "third-hand" smoke, and it's not just Apple. This is the kind of culture we're becoming.
Jordan Creek Mall
I dont think the entire problem is Apple. One of the problems is that this person took their lap top to that particular store. I used to live in Des Moines and the ineptitude that is on display there is shocking. I went in to purchase a lap top and asked their general manager if the computer i wanted to purchase came with a larger monitor and he just looked at me and said what's a monitor? seriously thats what he said. I walked out and never went back. I knew a girl who worked there and she told me at that particular store they intentional fucked up ipods that came in so they could jack up the repair cost or tell the customer that their damage wasnt apart of the warranty. Fuck Jordan Creek Mall...
