64 years ago today, America nuked the crap out of Japan for the first time. Go USA [News]

64 years ago today, the United States became the first and only country to nuke another country when at 8:15am, the "Little Boy" bomb was dropped over Hiroshima, absolutely devastating the city and killing 140,000 people. Two days later, with the destruction of Hiroshima so complete that Tokyo didn't know about the extent of the attack in time, the US dropped another bomb on Nagasaki, again destroying that city and ultimately bringing an end to World War II.

Boston.com has an incredible photo gallery of the incredible destruction of Hiroshima after the blast, which you can see here. You can also read more here at Wikipedia or ask Delsyd about it. The man is a walking encyclopedia of the history of the atomic weaponry. Fuck it, he should be writing this. He did contribute the following video link that's a CG re-enactment of the Hiroshima blast. People turning to nothing but burn marks on the wall in a split second.

Delsyd,

Say you were in the bottom of a standard swimming pool when the bomb went off would you live or just be boiled alive instantly?  Let's just say you were two miles from the detonation point?  Also would it matter where you were in the swimming pool?  Up against the wall closest to the explosion maybe.

From two miles away from a

From two miles away from a 16-20 kiloton explosion like Hiroshima, you wouldn't be toast instantly. Most of the nasty radiation and thermal damage from a nuke that size happens within the first mile. Getting near the wall wouldn't help so much, because the bomb is actually detonated  at 2-3000 feet or higher---it's essentially right above you, even 2 miles away. You might be temporarily blinded by the initial flash or suffer flash burns, but that would probably scare you enough to come to the surface. Now, when the blast wave hit you 10 seconds later, you run the risk of taking a car or a house to the forehead.  Plus, the most horrific injuries from atomic bombs are caused by the blast wave ripping already-blistered-and-burnt skin from your body. So, if you lived at that range, it might not be very pleasant.

Now, if your pool was within a quarter mile of the blast, you can hang it up. In the first 1/10th of a second, the air temperature would rise to around 1400F or a bit higher. Your pool with turn into steam instantly, you would get hit with that heat, a 5psi blast wave, and a high enough dose of radiation to kill you instantly without the heat and blast.
