The 50 Best Movies of the 2000s: The Final List [I Heart Movies]

Putting together a list of the 50 Best Movies of this decade or any decade is an incredibly daunting task, and one that is bound to be flawed. Movies, like any other form of entertainment are very personal and as hard as you try to be objective, any list like this is like a fingerprint-- if you got together 1000 people, not a single person would have the exact same list and each list would probably be very different from the last. But I took on this task, and while I tried to separate "Best Movies" from "My favorite movies", in the end, it's impossible to completely be objective. This isn't science, it's about feelings.
That being said, you'll disagree with this list probably on a number of different levels and that's something that can't be helped. I tried to take in your suggestions as much as I could, and I watched several incredible movies that you guys mentioned that I hadn't seen.
There's also the problem of doing a "Best of the Decade" list several months short of the last year of the decade. There's sure to be some great movies showing up in the last couple months of the year with the Oscar push, and those will be included in a Best of 2009 list, but I wanted to go ahead and get these 50 Best lists done now. Magnethead had suggested that I simply break up the list into the best 5 movies of the last 10 years, which at first I took as a great idea, mainly because it would keep me from having to actually pick a #1 movie of the last 10 years, but in the end, it didn't work, just because it didn't even out like I thought it would have. For example, there seems to have been a ton of great movies in 2006, where as 2002 seems to have been a crappy year for movies. If it weren't for a couple movies suggested by Darsh, there might have only been one movie for 2002 and I didn't want to include something like Chicago just to fill out 2002 and leave out a better movie from 2006.
So with all that apology, here's the list of 50 Best Movies of the Decade. It's not perfect by any means, but it's my final list, so there you go.
50. Amelie (2001)
Modern French whimsical fantasy at its best.
49. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Yes, Jim Carrey can be a serious actor. Sort of.
48. Unbreakable (2000)
A new twist on the old superhero / supervillain myth.
47. Shrek (2001)
Showed Disney that there's more than one company that can do quality animated films.
46. Cast Away (2000)
Tom Hanks. A volleyball. A desert island.
45. The Incredibles (2004)
An incredible Disney / Pixar superhero family film.
44. A Beautiful Mind (2001)
Anti-social mathmeticians can be heroes, too.
43. Cloverfield (2008)
Like Blair Witch plus Godzilla, only much much betterer.
42. WALL-E (2008)
The tale of a lonely robot on a garbage-covered Earth and his discovery of a thing called love.
41. Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Hands down, the best movie based on a theme park ride you'll ever see.
40. Donnie Darko (2001)
Listen to the rabbit. He knows what he's talking about.
39. Star Trek (2009)
JJ Abrams showed that he's got what it takes to bring the ST franchise back to life.
38. Crank (2006)
Absolutely over the top, batshit crazy insane fun.
37. Southland Tales (2006)
A truly bizarre film with a huge star-studded cast that just has to be seen more than once. Or thrice.
36. Munich (2005)
You fuck with the Jews, they'll fuck with you times a hundred.
35. Casino Royale (2006)
Daniel Craig proves to be a much better Bond than Pierce Brosnan. As good as Connery? Mmm maybe.
34. 28 Days Later (2002)
Running zombies on fire, but in the end, it's not really the zombies you have to worry about.
33. Lost in Translation (2003)
What was it that Bill Murray said to Scarlett Johansson at the end? "I'd totally do you" or something like that.
32. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)
Taking martial arts production and special effects into the 21st century.
31. The Bourne Identity (2002)
Matt Damon in a spy movie every bit as brilliant as anything written by Ian Fleming.
30. Sometimes in April (2005)
An incredible look at the 1994 Rwandan genocide starring Idris Elba, who you may know as Charles Miner from The Office.
29. Children of Men (2006)
Humanity has stopped being fertile-- except for one girl, who must be escorted to safety.
28. There Will Be Blood (2007)
I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE! I DRINK IT UP!
27. Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
Bringing Bollywood to Hollywood... probably the only decent movie about "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" that could ever be made.
26. Brokeback Mountain (2005)
Sure, it's "that gay cowboy movie", but it's way more than that. Absolutely should have won best picture over Crash.
25. Oldboy (2003)
The old ultra-violence taken to new, hilarious and disturbing levels.
24. Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Zombies may be getting cliche, but this zombie flick will never get old.
23. Letters from Iwo Jima (2006)
An absolutely gripping story of the Battle of Iwo Jima told from the Japanese perspective.
22. Spirited Away (2001)
One of Miyazaki's greatest in a pantheon of great films.
21. Borat (2006)
Dressing up as a Kazakh reporter and fucking with people has never been so much fun.
20. Mulholland Drive (2001)
In this tale of amnesia that bends the limits of reality, David Lynch shows that he's still got it.
19. 300 (2006)
All history lessons should be this fucking awesome, even if 300 wasn't entirely historically accurate.
18. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003)
All three movies could probably get stuck on this list, but here's the won that finally won the Best Picture statue for Peter Jackson.
17. District 9 (2009)
The tale of aliens confined to a South African ghetto is like no other alien-invasion story you've ever seen.
16. Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
Will Ferell is brilliant in this movie about a man who discovers he's merely a work of fiction.
15. American Psycho (2000)
Based on the best-selling novel by Brett Easton Ellis, it's brutal, bloody and hilarious.
14. Planet Terror (2007)
In my opinion, the far better half of Grindhouse-- it's a mile a second bloody zombie machine-gun-for-a-leg thrill ride.
13. The Departed (2006)
After seeing so many Italian mob movies, who knew that the Irish could be just as mean and nasty? Jack Nicholson at his best in a long time.
12. Inglourious Basterds (2009)
AND I WANT MAH SCALPS!
11. The Twilight Samurai (2002)
A beautiful tale of rekindled love, honor and family in mid 19th century Japan.
10. O Brother Where Art Thou? (2000)
The story of three escaped convicts traveling across country during the Great Depression, based on Homer's Odyssey is all at once funny, smart, beautiful and touching, another shining star in the Coen Brothers' vast galaxy of brilliant films.
9. Sin City (2005)
Robert Rodriguez's film adaptation of Frank Miller's brilliant Sin City graphic novels is in the rare class of movies that you could count on half a hand that's as faithful as you can possibly get to the source material it's based on. Not "Watchmen" faithful, where every little empty pop can makes its way into the film, but a kind of faithful where the tone, the energy and the attitude of the graphic novel shines through. The graphic novel will always be the graphic novel, but the graphic novel doesn't have Mickey Rourke as Marv.
8. The Lives of Others (2006)
The Lives of Others is a gorgeous film that goes where most other spy film's don't: The human and psychological impact of being an all-seeing ghost into someone else's life. The movie follows Captain Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Muhe) as he spies on an actress and her husband for the East German secret police.
7. Synecdoche, New York (2008)
Writer and director Charlie Kaufman has built a career on beautifully bizarre movies like Adaptation and Being John Malkovich. Synecdoche, New York is equally as bizarre, but more epic, more beautiful and more accessible than any of his previous works. In a nutshell, Synecdoche follows the story of theater director Caden Cottard as he gets completely lost in his final masterpiece while he's slowly dying of some unknown disease.
6. Anchorman (2004)
Will Ferell is arguably one of the funniest bastards of the last 10 years, having him in a movie is a guarantee of greatness-- Blades of Glory for example, which I bought without having seen, was an utter piece of crap. Anchorman however, is not only the best comedy of the decade, but one of the funniest, most brilliantly put together comedies in a long fucking time.
5. The Dark Knight (2008)
In the past 10 years, superhero movies have really come into their own as an art form and the one film that's transcended the spandex and superpowers to create a complete picture of the modern superhero myth has been The Dark Knight. Batman, being one of the few comic superheroes who's 100% human is easy to turn into a compelling human drama, and backed by the superb writing and directing talents of Christopher Nolan and the game-changing depiction of The Joker by Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight is probably the best superhero movie ever created.
4. No Country for Old Men (2007)
The Coen Brothers have proven time and time again that they don't really care to put themselves into boxes. They don't care about doing one thing well and doing it over and over-- they prefer to mix things up and do something a little different almost every time. With No Country for Old Men, they've created not only their best movie ever, but one that will be remembered for decades to come.
3. Battle Royale (2000)
The past decade has been an incredible era for Japanese cinema, especially in the area of shock and gore films. Shock films in the US are often straight-to-DVD affairs with cheap directors, writers and actors, but Japan has turned it into an art. Sure the premise of Battle Royale doesn't make a whole lot of sense-- a future where high school students are put on an island every year to battle to the death-- but the brilliance of BR is that it's done in such a way that it doesn't have to make sense. It's a brilliant human drama through and through... with a whole lot of fun violence and gore just to keep things interesting.
2. City of God (2002)
This Brazilian film is easily one of the best, most touching movies not only of the 2000s, but ever. It follows two boys growing up in the slums of Rio de Janeiro and the different paths they take in a world over saturated with crime. It could easily have been a cheesy melodramatic weep-fest, but with superb acting and writing and with the unique, engaging directorial style of Fernando Meirelles, it easily becomes a one of a kind classic.
1. Kill Bill Vol.1 and 2 (2003)
The number 1 spot was the hardest to figure out, because it says "I think this is the best movie of the decade above all others" and that's where that line between trying to be objective and picking my favorite movie of the decade starts to blur. In the first several iterations of the list, Kill Bill wasn't the #1 pick, but after hashing over it, I realized that while this is my personal favorite of the decade, it's also one that's got everything in one package-- an epic storyline, brilliant writing, brilliant acting, brilliant directing and an absolutely incredible score (done by The RZA in Vol.1 and Robert Rodriguez in Vol. 2).
Tarantino can be an often divisive director, and those of you who aren't Tarantino fans might not have even put it in the top 50 at all, while those of you who are Tarantino fans might have also had it in your top 5, but I feel that it's not only Tarantino's best film(s) to date, but the best of the last 10 years.

Good List
This is a pretty good list, only a couple I don't agree with. It's also a good list of movies that I need to add to my collection.
great list
great list...im surprised i actually own most of those films
Greedo shot first!
WALL-E at #42 is fucked up.
WALL-E at #42 is fucked up. Good to see THE TWILIGHT SAMURAI at #11 though. How did MONSTERS, INC. miss the list or did I just overlook it? You should have used the DVD Beaver way of voting: everybody make a Top 10 List and #1 gets 10 points down to #10 getting 1 point then add up the totals.

I agree with this list. surprisingly.
Wow
I always disagree with these lists, but that was pretty excellent... Reminded me of a number of films I now want to rewatch, too. Love that Oh Brother Where Art Thou was in the top 10. "Damn, we're in a tight spot!"
"This place is a geographical
"This place is a geographical oddity, 2 weeks from anywhere!"
Dissapointed
That Benjamin Buttfuckin' some how did not make the list.
awesome
You did really good I think. You added many movies that I didn't think people appreciated as much as they should, like Amelie and Donnie Darko.
