    In the mid to late 1800s, the large majority of immigrants from east Asia by far ended up in California and specifically, San Francisco. With this wave of immigrants came opium and with opium came opium dens. Since opium dens were generally poorly lit, and photography was a relatively new thing at the time, there are few photos of old California opium dens, but these photos were dug up Jeff Diehl of Spots Unknown and offer a rare glimpse into the strange world of opium in the late 19th century.

    An Asian woman and a black woman start off with some nasty words and it ends up into an all-out hair-pulling kung fu battle. I love how Yoko Ono in the foreground at the beginning is desperately trying to ignore what's going on. Thanks to Naly D for the link.

    So that's it... Macworld 2009 is done. Well, almost done. In a few hours it'll be done, but it's the last day and I'll be heading back to NC on Saturday evening.

    Some of you may or may not be aware that IHC is mainly based out of North Carolina. At least that where I (cranberryzero) and several of the authors are from. But this week, I'll be in San Francisco to cover Macworld 2009, the last year Apple will be here and the first one minus Steve Jobs. I'll try to keep the boobies and the stories and the videos flowing as much as I can throughout the week.

  • Free Movie Friday: The Times of Harvey Milk [I Heart Movies]

    One of the movies that many people are thinking will end up several Oscar nominations-- probably best picture and best actor for Sean Penn is Milk, the bio-pic about Harvey Milk, the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California and who was tragically assassinated by a fellow city supervisor in 1978. If you're not familiar with Harvey Milk, you could always just Wikipedia the shit or you could watch this Oscar-winning documentary on his life and familiarize yourself with him before you see Milk. Or at least it's a fascinating piece of American history.

  • San Francisco to vote on decriminilizing prostitution... hells yeah [News]

    There's often this notion that in San Francisco, anything goes. You've got hash clubs and wild, bawdy gay and BDSM festivals and Nancy Pelosi. There are still things that are illegal in San Francisco, but soon prostitution might not be one of those things. Well, prostitution will still technically be illegal by California law, but it would be decriminilized and not enforced if Proposition K passes the ballot next month. It's hoped that the measure would free up $11 million in police activity to focus on other crime and will allow sex workers to unionize for better benefits and protection.
