For those of you who remember the 80s, it was a good time for wild and bizarre accusations of devil worship. If you think it gets bad now at times, in the 80s, there were all sorts of urban legends about baby-killing Satanic cults in every neighborhood, so when people claimed that D&D was a tool to recruit people into the ways of Satan, many people believed it. The original Star Wars trilogy is best known for its practically still unparalled high quality miniature model effects. But here's a cool video on the making of the computer effects used in the film-- mainly the wireframe models of the Death Star and its trenches. These days, this sort of thing could be done in 5 minutes by anyone with a basic 3D rendering program, but in 1977, this was super hot shit.

Included as a bonus in the upcoming Star Trek the Original Series Season 3 box set is an alternate show pilot that has previously never been released and only available through word of mouth bootleg. So if you're an uber Trek fan, chances are that you might have already seen this, but even if you have, I'm sure that the quality will be much better on the DVD and Blu Ray release than whatever VHS'd copy you saw. This bizarre blast from the past is the 1982 commercial for the Spiderman game for the Atari 2600. It's cheesy, yes and it makes one wonder what I found so damn appealing about the 2600 when I was a kid, but more importantly it confirms my strong dislike for Green Goblin. Legendary TV cooking show personality Julia Child was well known for her French onion soup, but in this film from 1976, she cooks up a batch of primordial soup to illustrate how the building blocks of life might have formed in the nasty hot chemical cauldrons of a young Earth. This film was done for the Smithsonian's Life in the Universe gallery.

No, this isn't anything like the awful Sudanese rapper from yesterday. Blowfly was an early rap act from the 70s who was notorious for writing dirty rhymes years and years before it became standard for rap music. Born Clarence Reid, his stage name came from his grandmother, who said that he was "nastier than a blowfly" after she caught him singing "The Twist" with the lyrics "Suck my dick". We already knew that Kurt Russell had auditioned for the part of Han Solo, but until now, we've never been quite as thankful that Harrison Ford ended up with the role. Kurt Russell isn't really bad in this tape, but he's not Han Solo. Maybe he would have made a halfway decent Rebel soldier somewhere in the film, but not Solo. Via: Cinematical
