Sci-fi, especially movie and TV sci-fi looove them some alien motherships. And why not? They're huge and imposing and scare the shit out of everyone on Earth and they're very photogenic. They make humans seem like ants under a giant foot that could drop any second... in short, they're great plot devices. But the problem is, that even taking into account the super advanced fictional alien tech that they're based on, they don't make any sense.

The British government today released previously top secret files on the "Rendlesham Forest Incident" from 1980, one of the UK's most famous UFO sightings. And what was the top secret info that was revealed? Um, not a whole lot. All it seems to confirm is that the military saw some funny lights, but didn't know what they were. It also confirmed that there's an unsurprising spike in UFO sightings whenever there's stories in the newspaper, on TV or in movies about alien invasion. Sorry, UFO conspiracy theorists.
