Most Earth-like planet ever discovered a mere 42 light years away
Just 42 light years away, orbiting a brown dwarf star is a planet right now only known as GJ 1214b. While scientists have discovered a couple of other sort of Earth-like rocky planets, they’re mostly way too far away to be studied in any detail. But GJ 1214b, which is pretty much in our own neighborhood, will be able to be scrutinized in great detail.
Titanium foam builds strong metal bones like Wolverine
Of course, the clever scientists who invented this game-changing new technology probably weren’t thinking at all about creating superheroes. They want to use it to mend stronger bones if someone shatters a hip or a femur or something. How boring. But the good news is that this new titanium foam does allow the bone to breathe and stretch like one would assume adamantium-covered bone would have to do, so that’s a start. Someone just needs to invent adamantium.
First footage of the Doctor Who Christmas special, for real this time
Well, kind of for real. It’s a whopping 17 seconds of vague teaser footage culled from the larger BBC fall/winter shows trailer. But I guess this year’s Xmas Who will be a sort of a Christmas Carol sort of thing, hence the Doctor introducing himself as “The Ghost of Christmas Past”.
Full out zombie killing returns to PC and consoles this week with the release of Dead Rising 2. As a direct sequel to the original Dead Rising, you’re now living in a world where zombies are used for sport in places like the fictional Vegas-like Fortune City. Iran's got a fleet of flying machine gun-equipped boats
The US and the UK may have some super fancy jets and drones and shit, but Iran… Iran has bright blue flying boats WITH MACHINE GUNS. That’s all sorts of evil COBRA playset sort of awesome, like I want to imagine some Iranian commander standing up in one, shaking his fist saying “OOOH DAMN THOSE JOES!”
Peep these screenshots from Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare
Rockstar’s got a brand new Red Dead Redemption DLC pack coming out sometime this fall titled “Undead Nightmare”, that will be mainly a single-player campaign as John Marston searching for the cure for the zombie plague that’s sweeping the wild west. There will be some new gameplay mechanics, undead animals as well as people and some mythical creatures thrown in for good measure.
Depressing website of the day: The Incredibly Depressing Lottery Simulator
So you should already know that the odds of you winning a major state or Powerball lottery jackpot is incredibly thin. So incredibly thin that you might as well just play once a year, because you’ve basically got the same odds as playing once a week and it’ll save you a whole lot of money.
To prove it, check out the Incredibly Depressing Lottery Simulator, where you can pick five numbers plus a Powerball number and run it anywhere from once to 1,040 times at once (the equivalent of playing twice a week for 10 years). Aaand see what you win. Not a thing. I ran it 1,040 times and won $75 out of the total cost of $1,040. Yay me.
New imaging technology gives the world an incredibly detailed photo of a snake digesting a rat
Using a combination of computer tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), scientists Kasper Hansen and Henrik Lauridsen of Aarhus University in Denmark were able to visualize the entire internal organ structures and vascular systems (aka “guts”) of a Burmese Python digesting a rat. By choosing the right settings for contrast and light intensity during the scanning process, the scientists were able to highlight specific organs and make them appear in different colors. The non-invasive CT and MRI scans could let scientists look at animal anatomy without the need for other invasive methods such as dissections.
Michael Caine just went and ruined the ending of Inception
Whether you’ve seen Inception at this point or not, you might be familiar with the ending with the spinning top and then fade to black, leaving you wondering whether the whole thing was just a dream or not. It’s a brilliant open-ended conclusion and now Michael Caine just went and fucked it up for everybody. Spoilers ahead.
In Japan, Jersey Shore is called "Macaroni Rascals". That's all.
No, I’m not at all going into any sort of Jersey Shore news. Fuck you. All you need to know is that in Japan, the show is called “Macaroni Rascals”. That’s pretty much spot on and fucking awesome. I don’t see any point in ever calling the show anything else ever again.
IHC Movie Reviews: Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl (2009)
Transfer student Monami is a vampire and she has a crush on Mizushima who happens to be the kinda-boyfriend of Keiko who’s father is secretly a mad scientist who, in cahoots with the sexy school nurse, is killing students and experimenting on reanimation. Wow! The pretty much the entire story, but what makes this movie stand out is the fact that the filmmakers are just out to entertain the audience and they do.
Guybrush Threepwood to make a cameo in SW Force Unleashed II
According to the official Facebook page of Star Wars Force Unleashed II, Monkey Island star Guybrush Threepwood will be making some sort of cameo in the game. I assume that it’s probably just a skin for multiplayer or something to that effect, though having to have an insult-based lightsaber duel would warm my cold, cold heart.
Brothels are now decriminalized in Ontario. Time for that road trip.
Good news party people in the great province of Ontario, or those who plan on visiting soon, a judge recently overturned bans on pimping, solicitation and running brothels. I can’t wait to have a Canadian hooker holiday.
Woman sets her husband's penis on fire to keep him from cheating
Rajini Narayan of Adelaide, Australia told courts that “she loved her husband so much” that she thought setting fire to his dick would end his cheating ways. And so it did… her husband, an engineer who engineers ships for the Australian navy suffered severe burns over 75% of his body and died in the hospital.
Greg Giraldo died at a New Jersey hospital Wednesday, four days after being admitted following an accidental overdose of prescription medication. He was 44. The news was first reported by fellow comic and longtime friend Jim Norton, who tweeted a photo of the two and the message, “RIP Buddy.”
"Greg Giraldo was a good guy," tweeted Lucky Louie star Louie C.K. "The kind of you’re always glad to see. Also a funny comic and person. He died today. Goodbye friend. "Belly-laugh hilarious, prolific, good & kind. A thousand oys can’t express" added Sarah Silverman a bit later.
Long lost footage of the Apollo 11 mission surfaces
A while back, some footage of the Apollo 11 moon landing that had thought to have been lost was discovered in Australia. The footage was restored and will be screened for the first time ever in Sydney this week.
So how is it that this footage was lost? And how did it end up in Australia?
IHC DVD reviews: Important Things with Demetri Martin season 2
First, let me be honest— Demetri Martin isn’t my favorite comedian. He’s not bad, he’s good at his particular style, but normally I’m one more for comedians that are quite a bit raunchier, like Carlin, Louis CK and Pryor. But when someone sends me something free to review, by god I’ll watch it and review it. So after watching three discs of “Important Things with Demitri Martin” season 2, does it change my mind about Mr. Martin? Somewhat.
Final design and release date for the Nintendo 3DS announced
At a conference in Tokyo yesterday, Nintendo announced the final design of the 3DS (above, which hasn’t really changed from the last time except for the stylus) and a release date. And that date, at least for the Japanese market, is February 26, 2011. The 3DS will retail there for ¥25,000 (USD$300). Two colours will be available at launch: “Aqua Blue” and “Cosmos Black”.
Release dates for the European and North American markets were not quite as specific, Nintendo saying that the handheld would be out in the West in March 2011. No pricing details for these regions were not disclosed.
