A video showing why houseflies are so hard to swat [The More You Know]
There’s still a little bit of summer left and with summer comes flies. And houseflies are like little ninjas, highly evolved to deftly evade your attempts to swat them. Now with the help of super high speed cameras, we can see exactly how flies manage to get away so easily. We already know that they’re able to take in visual information extremely quickly, so if you go at them with a girly swat, they’re watching it in slow motion. But they also do a little dance with their legs, shifting the middle pair of legs forwards or backwards or sideways to get away from you at any angle. Here’s some fly swatting tips: Come at them very slowly, try to get them from behind and it’s all in the wrist. Without a lightning quick snap of the wrist, they’re just going to fly off and laugh at your sorry ass.
