Know your Internet hoaxes: Using cellphones to pop popcorn [The More You Know]
There’s been several videos going around the internet lately, showing groups of people using usually 4 cellphones in a circle around several kernels of popcorn and then by calling the cellphones, the popcorn pops. They seemed pretty iffy to me and the idea seemed pretty implausible and it looks like that Snopes has debunked them, along with the earlier hoax that you could cook an egg between two cellphones. Just more technophobe shit.
The first and third videos, maybe… in the second video, the acting is so bad there’s no way it’s real. The most likely explanation is that there’s a heater of some sort under the table to cook the popcorn. Because when a cellphone rings, it’s picking up a signal aimed at that phone that it recognizes, but there’s cellphone signals going through us and popcorn and cellphones all the time, so it really doesn’t matter whether the cellphone is ringing or not. The cellphone frequency is not such that it can actually produce heat anywhere near enough on the scale to pop a kernel of popcorn.
