Guitar Hero IV wants really bad to be Rock Band II [I Heart Games]

Activision’s guitar and bass only cash cow will be changing gears in the next iteration, “branching out” as Activision put it into new instruments. They mentioned vocals specifically, but not drums, though it’s very likely. The press release also mentioned that they plan to include local bands in the game, though no idea as of yet how that would work out. Like that’s just what I need, some screeching System of a Down wannabe band fouling the air of my living room.
From IGN:
Speaking in the May issue of Conde Nast Portfolio magazine, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick revealed some of Guitar Hero’s future plans. Other instruments are apparently getting the Hero treatment, including vocals. The fourth installment of the franchise will also let players jam along with local bands from their area.
“It’s not just about guitars,” Kotick says. “We’ll include a lot of other instruments, vocals. It will help us expand internationally. It’s the first game we’ve had in which we can use local content and local bands.”
From a business perspective, I can see how they would want to branch out since long gone are the days that they could have just put out the same thing with new songs– post-release downloadables take care of that, and they’ve sort of taken guitars almost as far as they can go alone in GH3. What I’d like to see, rather than a Rock Band clone, would be to use the guitars as synths to produce a wide range of instrumentals sounds from sitar to keyboard, theremin, organ, etc.
