How To: Pour a perfect pint of Guinness [How To]

For lovers of Guinness, it’s not just a beer, it’s an experience that makes life worth living. And while you can get a close proximity to the real taste of a Guinness from a bottle, and bless them for trying, you haven’t actually tasted a Guinness until you’ve had one properly poured from the tap.
Your Budweiser, your Dos Equis and your Coors don’t give a crap whether it’s poured fast or slow, sideways or longways– it’s still gonna taste like ass. Guinness however is like James Joyce of beers– you can’t just approach it unprepared– it’s a complex, beautiful thing. Properly done, it’s a hopsy, slightly bitter mother’s milk. The proper method to turn your Guinness experience into a thing of wonder is the technique known as the two-step pour:
- Start with a tulip-shaped pint glass that’s clean and dry. Tilt the glass to a 45-degree angle under the tap and pour until the glass is three-quarters full.
- Let sit for several minutes to let it settle. The beer should be black and flat.
- After it’s settled, fill the glass the rest of the way. No need to tilt the glass anymore; you want to create the signature foamy head on top. It’s okay if some foam spills over the side — that means you’ve got it full enough!
- Enjoy.
