Miss Landmine Survivor [Operation Mindfck]
“Landmine victims are to take part in a beauty contest in Angola, where tens of thousands have been injured by mines. The pageant aims to restore the confidence of victims and raise awareness of their plight.”

Landmines are terrible, there’s no doubt about that. But what moron thought parading victims across a stage in front of the world leads to positive awareness of the situation? I’m sure there will be a few who see past the immediate mindfucking and recognize the stated goal of this beauty contest, and a few of those people might even step up in support like the late Diana, Princess of Wales.
But what about the majority who, I’m sure, are likely going to notice, if only out of morbid curiosity, and snicker quietly in the background? How is THAT going to raise these survivors’ confidence, which is apparently the main goal of this beauty pageant? And how do you think the judges will disqualify potential contestants? “Sorry, your stub isn’t pretty enough.” “Oh, this pageant is only for leg amputees.”
What if this catches on? Will we start seeing Miss Botched Face Lift and Mr. Bitch Tits? Anything is possible, it seems.
Way to raise the confidence of the few, at the cost of the many. Stay classy Angola.
And if you don’t think landmines can be funny, here ya go:

I think this ”Miss Landmine” contest is a great initiative as it shows that victims of landmines are mostly innocent just like these beautiful women…
(great vid)

I agree that the message needs to get out that landmine victims are usually innocent civilians, and that the threat is ever present in nations like Angola. One thing about this beauty pageant is that it was to “raise victim’s confidence”, not specifically to tell the world about their plight.
But even if it was to communicate this issue, I think using a beauty pageant is the wrong way to do this. Beauty pageants by their very nature are exclusive, and to claim it’s to “raise the victim’s” confidence is, to me, a farce when only one from each province gets to compete, and one “winner” out of them is selected. Like I said above, it raises the confidence of a very small few at the cost of many, contradicting their objective. Hence “Operation Mindfuck” - it really makes no sense, at all.
