Remember that scene from Back to the Future 2 where those kids in the 80s cafe got annoyed that the Wild Gunman machine had to be controlled by hand? Is that future upon us? If you believe the hype of the Emotiv Epoc it might. Or… it might not.
There’s been a long and storied history of brain-interface devices with computers. Usually it involves some gigantic, unwieldy device the size of a large block engine that sits on your head while you’re tethered by wires to make binary yes or no decisions based on brain patterns. And now Emotiv has introduced the Epoc, which is small, looks somewhat comfortable and works… uh… some of the time.
If you watch the demo below, you can see that while the tech has definitely come a long way, it’s still pretty primitive in many respects, so don’t expect this to replace your precious Wii any time soon.
