How to: Change the default message on HP printers [How To]
Last Friday at work, while it was still early and no one was quite awake yet, the sales and marketing manager went to the common work printer to pick up something she had printed out as she often does when she started asking around: “Uh, why does the printer say Please Insert Kitten?”
The answer to that bizarre question is that some clever guy the night before had run a simple script the night before that allows you to change the default message on an HP printer from “Printer Ready” to… whatever you want. So he went for “Please Insert Kitten”… his second choice apparently was “Player 2 Press Start”.
So via Lifehacker and via the guy at work, this little bit of office fun is here at IHC– quick, easy and a barrel of laughs.
Just telnet to port 9100 and type in the following:
\e%-12345X\@PJL JOB
\@PJL RDYMSG DISPLAY="MESSAGE HERE"
\@PJL EOJ
\e%-12345X
And there you have it… Please Insert Kitten, Player 2 Press Start, Go Fuck Yourself, whatever you want.
