Apple getting into the console biz? For reals this time? [I Heart Tech]
Companies file patents for crazy shit all the time– take a look at the peripheral patents Nintendo filed shortly before the Wii’s launch. So it’s very possible that Apple’s covering their bases, but anything that Apple does it watched with rapid fanboy glee, and ever since Microsoft jumped into the console wars with the Xbox, it’s been rumored that Apple might do the same.
And considering that Apple has proven lately that they’re more than willing to extend themselves into realms once thought unthinkable for them, it’s not far-fetched.
The patent covers the name Apple in the realms of:
Toys, games and playthings, namely, hand-held units for playing electronic games; hand-held units for playing video games; stand alone video game machines; electronic games other than those adapted for use with television receivers only; LCD game machines; electronic educational game machines; toys, namely battery-powered computer games.
It’s possible that Apple could go in this direction, but don’t hold your breath. Remember the Pippin?
