Moment of Zen: Lay’s Salt and Vinegar Chips [Misc.]

xspefo7l_small.jpgToday I had a bag of Lay’s Salt and Vinegar chips for lunch. That and a can of Vienna sausages. I’m a huge fan of salt and vinegar potato chips and for the first time today, I noticed on that friendly blue bag the words “with artificial flavors”. Artificial flavors? For salt and vinegar?

Yeah sure, for things with bacon or barbecue sauce or sour cream and onion, artificial flavoring is essential for mass production to keep costs down and to prevent people from getting sick from improperly stored real bacon powder for example. But salt… and vinegar? Two things that are already preservatives, already the basis for most other artificial flavors in some capacity, they’re cheap and easy to mix– I always just imagined a giant, putrid briny vat with a salt and vinegar mix that was sprayed onto the chips on a giant conveyor… why the need for artificial vinegar or for fuck’s sake artificial salt flavoring for that matter?
